After that little voting booth we had last week, some of you didn't even know what a bishounen was, one of the most used words in Anime! ;_; Well, don't worry, Sayami-chan will teach you all of the basics, what better person to teach you than this Japan native girl!
Types of AnimeAnime-- a.k.a Japanimation. It's short for Japanese animation, der.Manga [MAHN-GAH]-- Japanese comic books. Depending on the popularity of the comic, it may be released in magazines like "Shounen Sunday" or come out in its own volumes. Doujinshi [DOH-JEEN-SHEE]-- Japanese fan comics. Most doujinshi are based on exsiting animanga. Shounen [SHOH-EN]-- Animes that deal with fighting, transformers, war, science fiction, whatever boys like basically. "Shounen" is "boy" in Japanese, so you can kinda figure why they called them shounen. Maho Shounen [MAH-HOH SHOH-NEN]-- The anime/manga with a "magical boy" storyline such as D.N. Angel and Inuyasha. Seinen [SEH-EE-NEN]-- Meaning "young man", targeted for an 18-30 year old male audience. Animes such as Elfen Lied, Ah! My Goddess!, and Cowboy Bebop are in this genre. Usually published in Young Jump, Ultra Jump, Afternoon, and etc. Mecha-- Mecha a.k.a Shounen animes are mostly like those animes that has a lot of robots, transformers, etc. These animes are reconized as "shounen" animes, meaning they're suppose to interest the boys more. There are some shoujo animes out there though. Shoujo [SHOH-HOH]-- Animes that appeal girls, since the term shoujo means "girl" in Japanese. These animes have a lot of love, romance, fantasy, etc. Maho Shoujen [MAH-HOH SHOH-HOH]-- The anime/manga with a "magical girl" storyline such as Sailormoon and Cardcaptor Sakura. Josei [JOH-SEH-EE]-- Meaning "young woman", targeted for late teenage and young adult woman. Usually more realistic story lines. An example would be NANA. Kodomo [KOH-DOH-MOH]-- Meaning "child" and are intended for small children. The storylines are more family and child-friendly themes and concepts. Examples are Hello Kitty and Pokemon. Bishounen [BEE-SHOH-EN]-- Term meaning "pretty boy". Many anime/manga writers make up these characters for girls to fall for. ^^ hehe, it works huh. An example of a bishounen is Sesshoumaru. ^______^ Bishoujo [BEE-SHOH-HOH]-- Term meaning "pretty girl". Trust me, you've all seen this word before, does "Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon" ring a bell? Apocalyptic/Post-Apocalyptic-- The storyline is based on the end of a civilization and there is usually a great deal of psychological analysis with the characters. A perfect example of this genre is Neon Genesis Evangelion. Harem [HAHR-EHM]-- Genre where many female characters are usually attracted to the leading male character. Examples are Love Hina, Ranma 1/2, and Tenchi Muyo!. Ecchi [ET-CHEE]-- Meaning "perverted" or "naughty". Usually this type of anime has vague sexual content. Shoujo-ai/Yuri [YOO-REE]-- Meaning "girl love" and the storylines are based on love and romance between female characters. Shounen-ai-- Meaning "boy-love" and the storylines are based on love and romances between male characters. An example would be Gravitation. Yaoi [YAH-OH-EE]-- Like "Shounen-ai" but usually contain explicit sexual activity.
